解嚴三十多年，不同世代的台灣當代藝術家，在今天面對戒嚴及解嚴，會有如何的反省與回應？林志明教授曾於2017年擔任大內藝術節「解／嚴」此一展覽的策展人，邀請多位不同世代的代表性藝術家自行提出作品，並推薦其他創作者或作品，共同完成展出。與此同時，策展人也與藝術家進行深入的訪談，本書即此訪談之成果。書中一共收錄莊普、梅丁衍、吳天章、吳瑪悧、陳界仁、王俊傑、陳志誠、黃心健、姚瑞中、高俊宏、許家維等11位藝術家的訪談錄，從中不僅窺見1980年代以來台灣藝術的發展，也看見「戒嚴」與「解嚴」的多元性。

本册专论有清一代。作者为治清代学术思想史的名家，其《中国近三百年学术史》影响很大。本册各篇虽写作时间跨度很大，但多为《学术史》后之作，因此本册某种程度上是对该书的补充增订。 作者四十年代还写过一部专著《清儒学案》，惜在抗战中沉埋江底。《中国学术思想史论丛(8)》收录了1942年发表的《清儒学案序》，由此可略窥作者当年的写作理路，殊为难得。
