以往学术界在这两个问题上存在着较大分歧，近代手工业的长期存在是多重因素综合作用的结果。在外部经济环境上，传统农民经济的贫困化、手工业与民族机器工业的良性互动、手工业经济中的政府行为、国际市场的引力效应(这一点学界论述较多，本文从略)等等；在自身经济形态上，手工业生产力的变革取向、手工业生产形态的近代性变迁，都是造成中国近代手工业经济长期存在的原因。 本书认为，中国近代手工业是一种介于传统与现代之间的中间经济层次，中间经济既是对手工业经济形态变更所处阶段的定位，又是对手工业在传统农业和现代工业中间所起作用的规范，给中国近代社会经济史研究打开了新的领域。
